The
return of James Place springs from Vanishing, a track included in his albumStill Waves to a Whisper (Umor Rex
2019), and which sets the tone for this wonderful, dark and melancholic collection
of tracks. Reworking live set sessions of that track, James Place created an ambient / stretched version, focusing on
pitched vocals, deep pads, and field recordings. This is also the second time
that he uses his Homeward alter-ego, which previously appeared in "Move in
Blue", releasing an original track in Voices
Bloom (Umor Rex 2017). This is also a continuation of James Place’s custom of constantly reworking his music, playing
around live sessions or sometimes completely new interpretations, a custom that
started in Interpretations of
Superstition (Umor Rex 2015), comprised of reworked versions of his album Living in Superstition (Umor Rex 2015).
The compositions of James Place are
never quite finished; they can mutate at any time.
This
album includes a second version of "Vanishing" remixed by Dylan Henner, whose approach to ambient
music —choral, effervescent, lulling— is favored by James Place. "Low" was written and recorded on a very old
piano in Philadelphia after James fell in love with its sad and ancient
quality. The final "Eulalie" is in D Minor and was written using a
Blofeld and Vermona DRM, in a fast interplay between improvisation and
composition. "Ramona's Fall" is dedicated to Runtsy / Ramona, who
fell from a great height and was never the same after that.
